Prof. Gary Taylor is the director of the Brunel Institute of Power Systems (BIPS). He is alsothe Smart Power Networks theme leader in the newly formed Institute of Energy Futures. Hereceived his BSc degree in Electronic Physics from Royal Holloway College, University ofLondon, in 1987, and his MSc and PhD degrees in Applied Mathematics from the Universityof Greenwich in 1992 and 1997 respectively. He was appointed at Brunel University as aNational Grid post-doctoral scholar from 2000-2003. He has contributed to over 160research publications concerning applied mathematics and computing in both powersystems and general engineering. His research interests include smart grids, smartmetering, big data analytics, renewable energy systems, power system and networkoperation, power system economics and electricity markets. He has led and collaborated ona number of EPSRC and EU funded Smart Grid research projects.

Prof. Gary Taylor is the UK lead investigator for a major international UK-China EPSRC-NSFC funded Smart Grids project entitled‘Developing Scalable Smart Grid Infrastructure toEnable Secure Transmission System Control’ [1]. The research partners from China areTsinghua University, Sichuan University and State Grid. The research partners from the UKare National Grid, Alstom and Intel. A key aspect of the project is the scalable analysis ofmassive data in relation to secure transmission system operation and control [2].Prof Gary Taylor was also the project coordinator for a 6.4 m euro FP7 Energy & ICT SmartGrids project entitled ‘High Performance Computing Technology for Smart DistributionNetwork Operation’ HiPerDNO [3]. The consortium included Brunel University London,University of Oxford, UK Power Networks, EDF R&D SA, IBM, Union Fenosa, INDRA andFraunhofer IWES.
